Day 72: December 30

I really want to be one of those people, who when they sing, people stop what they're doing and just listen. They listen to the sweet melodic tune that is coming our of your mouth. They can hear the soul and passion you've put into the song. They can hear your love for the music and the lyrics. I want to be able to express myself through song and to be able to tell someone how I feel without actually telling them. I do have writing though. I love love love to write. When I write I can express myself like I can nowhere else. My writing doesn't always make sense and it doesn't always express what I mean, but it's about as close as I'm going to get. I love being able to write. Poems, stories, fanfictions, blogs - you name it, I've probably written one (or at least attempted to).

Day 71: December 29

My favourite place has got to be my room, or where my friends are. My room is my haven; it has everything I need (except for a constant food supply). I have books, my camera, my Ipod, my phone, paper, pens, the radio, my bed. My bedroom is my sanctuary. Whenever I have a shouting match with my family (most of the time, my mom), I'll go to my room. I don't really like sleeping, but I love lying in my bed in the morning, reading. If the book is good enough, I can read for hours and hours on end. My friends are my chosen family. I love them to bits. They make me laugh, they cheer me up when I'm sad, and they listen when I'm pissed and I just want to rant (which is quite often). They're there for me when I need them, and they're often there when I don't need them. We have our fights, but we apologise and make up. Our 'group' is made up of vastly different people:
= Tall, smart, African-American, Justin Bieber, The Janoskians, loud
+ Small, very loud, Jewish, Straightens her hair, Brilliant at English
* Chinese, Smart, Small, very sporty, loud as hell, Anglican
& Average Height, Jewish, Janoskians, Justin Bieber, Smart, Spanish, loud
^ Chinese, Smart, Tall, Funny, loud
# South-African, Jewish, gymnastics, loud, smart
That just about sums about our group. I have other friends, who are just as amazing and funny and awesome that aren't in my 'group'. I think friends are the most important, because unlike family, they choose to be there, unlike family who has to be there. (and I'm not saying I don't love my family, because I'm not. I absolutely love them to death).

Day 70: December 28

Verwelkom, mense van die internet (Welcome, people of the internet).

LOTE. Languages Other Than English. Or, in my case, languages that other people speak and I do not. I did Hebrew lessons for 6 years and the only think I remember is the letters (very vaguely), and I can very haltingly read. I did French for two years, and omg, I am so unskilled. I know a little bit - counting, a few phrases - but really not very much. I learnt Afrikaans and Xhosa when I was in grade 1. I really wish I knew another language. Two of my friends speak Chinese and my other friend speaks Spanish. My parents speak Afrikaans and they use this as a weapon to talk in front of me and my sister. My older sister knows some Afrikaans, but she is forever mixing up her phrases. My one claim to fame is that I can count from one to ten in five languages (including english, that is). They are: Afrikaans, English (duh), Xhosa ( pronounced ko-za), Hebrew and French (Oui!).

My Xhosa is a bit
rusty as I did learn it in grade 1. My French is slightly

dodgy because I suck at pronunciation. So this is a sound recording of me counting from oneto ten in those five languages. https://soundcloud.com/kavendish/counting-from-1-10-1/s-G6YKZ

Day 69: December 27

I'm not a high fan of classics. In fact, I quite loudly dislike them. But with no proper reason, it seems. I have never read The Great Gatsby or even To Kill A Mockingbird. I have started to read To Kill A Mockingbird twice, as we are doing it for school, but I can never seem to get into it. I think my dislike stems from the fact that I dislike ye old English and I find it hard to get into. When I read something, it has to grab me right from the start to actually capture my attention. I think that's why I love murder mystery novels so much. They are full of secrets, lies and clues at every twist and turn of the novel. Today I saw Les Miserables, which my sister pronounced Lez Miz-er-ables. So, so wrong. Despite my cynicism, it was actually rather good. The whole thing was sung, save for a few words. I think the movie captured me right from the beginning to the very end. It took me away, to Paris, to the 1800s. I'm a big believer in 'books before movies', but in this case, I think it was a 'movie before book'.

Sixty-nine 'Classic' Books:

Day 68: December 26

Happy Boxing Day.

I know so many people my age (and older & younger) that are so talented, but don't always get recognised. Of course, for people with athletic talent, there's regional and state championships. But, even then they don't get recognised very much. People congratulate them, an then that's about it. I think people, the world over, should know about these talented human beings. And what about people with talents that aren't as athletic? So I, Lauren, propose, that we as people of the Internet, should start and host a Young Adult Olympics. Day 67: December 25

People of Blogspot (and other people who just come on here, just to look at their favourite blogs). MERRY CHRISTMAS. HAPPY (BELATED) CHANNUKAH. (I'M PRETTY SURE THERE'S ANOTHER RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL ON NOW(ISH) BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO THINK OF THE NAME). I hope your day was excellent - filled with the likes of family, friends and food. Might (or may?) your bacon/pork/beef/fish/whatever you had have been cooked to perfection. I hope you took an extra helping of the pudding. Forget your diet for one day and just eat. Stuff your face people. There's not too many days in the year where you can just forget everything and eat food. Embrace it. I hope you laughed louder and got excited for no apparent reason. I hope you loved receiving your gifts as much as your loved giving them. Also, I hope you didn't have too much trouble with the 'reaction' to your presents. I hate opening presents and then everyone is watching you - waiting for your reaction. Are you gonna like it? Are you going to hate it? How good are you at faking that you like in, when in actual fact, it is the worst present since Tiffany Hall got a whale's penis bone?
So people, embrace the fact that today, you spent (or are going to spend) the whole day with family and/or friends. Eat lots. Laugh lots. And just embrace it.

So there is my Christmas/(belated) Channukah, another religious festival's wish.

46. In my favourite childhood books - Animal Ark by Lucy Daniels - I always read the name Lydia as Linda
47. I am allergic to no food item
48. I am, however, allergic to mosquito bites
49. I prefer stilettos over wedges
50. I am also allergic (or as my mom would say, sensitive) to athletic tape and some materials (e.g. wool)
51. I never want to be a teacher
52. Or an accountant (snooze factor)
53. Whenever people sleep over at my house, they dislike the ticking of the clock
54. I hate sleeping in silence (ie. I like the clock. If I can't sleep, I count the ticks)

61. I want to do something worthwhile when I'm older

63. I'm irrational. Screw logic.
64. I would love to be best friends with Raven Symore, Rebel Wilson, Emma Watson, Emma Stone, J.K. Rowling, John Green and Andrew Garfield (Actually, this list can go on forever...)
65. I really want to meet someone from the Harry Potter cast
66. I can type really fast, but according to my grade 7 I.T. teacher, my 'fingers are placed incorrectly'.
67. I love making lists (as we can see through this blog).

Alright, yes, I know, I've already done a list on facts about me, but these are different.
1. They are about my family and not only me
2. These are obscure facts and although I might have overlapped one or two facts, the majority is different.
3. Deal with it.

Lately, I've been doing actual lists - things that have a right and wrong answer. I think I'm going to be doing more of these kind; a list where no-one can tell me what's right and what's wrong, because the answers will be opinion based.

That is all.

Day 66: December 24

Happy Christmas Eve (Day)!
I've never understood why tonight - the 24th - is called Christmas Eve. Shouldn't tomorrow night - the 25th - be called Christmas Eve as tomorrow night is the Eve Of Christmas? But I suppose, as I pointed this out to my dad, we have more than one of these 'eves' in our year. New Years Eve, for example. That's also, technically, the eve before the new year, not the eve of the new year. Confusing stuff.

So I survived the ending of the world. Shocker. Never saw that one coming.
We have a guinea pig 'staying with us', like we are looking after it for a friend. It's a male and it's called Tubby. Unfortunately, we can't put it in with mine, because they'll have sex and we'll have baby guinea pigs. Which would be pretty adorable...

Day 63: December 21

Guys, as some of you may know, today, 21/12/12, is the end of the world. After the world ends (or maybe during the ending?), there will also be a zombie apocalypse. Just thought I'd let you people know in case you weren't informed of this minor event.

Today, I went to the city to meet my dad for lunch. Now I have a love/hate feeling towards the city. I hate how there are so many people there and you can't walk one step without walking into someone. But I actually love all the people. There's so many different colours, clothes, shoes, personalities, hair styles; just different people. I love people watching. Just staying still as people walk by - some of them are clearly in a rush, others just dawdle, as if they're taking a walk in the park. Lots of people wear heels. I never understood that - why would you wear heels to walk around the city in? Won't your feet hurt? My feet hurt when I wear runners (although I do have ankle issues). I love seeing the different clothes and shoes people wear. I love to see the mix-and-match up of things that people have on.

Day 62: December 20

Today I had my friend over and we talked about everything - friends, people we don't like, school, teachers, guys, actors, singers, people obsessed with famous people, stalkers, Justin Bieber, One Direction, modelling, New Years Eve, jobs, Magic Mike, how bad Magic Mike was, Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, YouTube videos, Matthew McConaughey, strippers, people at our school, dogs, ex-boyfriends, next year, work experience, Central Australia, advertising. Just everything.

In my group of friends, there are people I trust more than others. There's always that one friend that you tell stuff to. There's always the friend that you love, but only sorta trust. There's the friend that knows some of your secrets, but not all. There's the friend that you're just friends with and they don't really know any of your secrets.

Day 61: December 19

This morning I dyed my hair spicy cinnamon. I have already dyed my hair twice before - red and then black - but both times for the World's Greatest Shave. This time I just wanted to do something different with my hair, so voila, it is now spicy cinnamon.
Today, we had to collect our school magazine, and then afterwards myself and five of my friends came back to mine and we hung it. We literally watched YouTube videos for three hours straight. Mostly One Direction and Kingsley. We also ate, did not SHUT UP and laughed heaps.

Day 60: December 18

Today is my grandpa's birthday and he is turning 85. He is one of those people who finds modern technology both confusing and hard to use. We recently bought him and my granny a computer and then downloaded Skype for them to use. My granny loves it - she's totally tech - savvy and I reckon if she was a kid now, she would love learning about all the new things. My grandpa on the other hands doesn't like using this new technology. It's like he's scared of it or something or maybe he'll get a disease. I sort of understand his hesitation, I mean it is new and different, but I do say EMBRACE IT! EMBRACE THE NEW AND EXCITING TECHNOLOGY AND USE IT TO YOUR FULL ADVANTAGE.

Day 59: December 17

Can people (ie. people that I know) NOT be so obsessed with celebrities and who they're dating and who they're not dating? Like, come on, I like to see who is dating who as much as the next person, but when you get upset or say "Oh, I'm not a fan anymore", after your celeb dates someone you don't like is just ridiculous.  Like you can ship them or not, I really don't care. Just let them be! You can have your opinions, but keep them to yourself or if you wanna share them, do it in a non-emotional state or just to your friends, not to a world-wide view.

Day 58: December 16

I am feeling much better and for some reason, the internet is really slow.
Guys, I read The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. I cried. I have never cried from a book before. John Green is a seriously amazing writer, and manages to portray the character's feelings so you at feeling the exact same thing yourself. He has that amazing ability to make the characters seem like real people - like you're their friend, like you're right there next to them.
Cancer. Such a sad, tragic 'disease'. Obviously cancer is horrible and I never wish anyone to have it, but reading this book actually shows me the devastating effects that cancer has on people. Authors, and other people, always glass over how it makes them feel, or they just don't seem to capture the exact feelings. This book...wow. This thing, cancer, is just something I wish never existed and I very much hope a cure can be found. Following my love of The Fault In Our Stars (and also my reading of Looking For Alaska), I have preceded to buy five of John Green's books. (http://www.bookdepository.com)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those who have passed. I wish the families and friends nothing but the best. I hope they have continuous support, especially over the next couple of weeks, but also for the next couple of years. I hope nothing like this every EVER happens to them or people they know, or  to  NO-ONE at all. To the victims of this terrible tragedy, may you rest in peace. May your souls go to a happier place and just know that you will never ever be forgotten.

Day 55: December 13

So today is the 14.12.12, and I was unable to write yesterday as I was hiking on my Duke Of Ed Hike. Joyous. So let me tell you a little about this hike: We left from school at about 9.00am and about an hour and a half later we arrived in Torquay. LET OUR DAY BEGIN! After about 5 or 6 kms, we stopped for lunch. By that time, the sun was high in the sky, the weather was seriously hot and my feet were in pain. We finished lunch and walked along the nude beach for a couple of kms. At one stage, we had a break by some rocks, in the shade and the teachers - Miss A, Huddo and Jordan - were doing handstands and cartwheels and having competitions. We were just minding our business when this guy comes jogging along. People, we were on a nude beach. Go figure. After about half an hour, we moved on and got to the top of a path, where we had to waited for one of the other groups, who had taken a detour, to come. We waited for quite a while until they finally came. We went to our next destination, which was another beach. This beach was horrible, because the sand was soft and it was really dune-y. From the beach was a walking track which went on FOREVER. It seriously did not ever stop. The end of the track was our 'campsite', which I swear was not a campsite, but a random patch of grass that just happened to have portaloos on it. The ground was really bumpy, which warranted a bad nights sleep. Anyway, the next morning at 5.50am, I was up. Ew. Anyway, this time one of the teachers told me to put my 15kg bag in the trailer because of my feet problems. Aiyana and I packed up and everyone was ready by 9am (even though we were meant to be ready by 8.30am). The walk yesterday was much better. It was more downhill and the weather was definitely less hot. We even had a sea breeze. The view was amazing and I thought that maybe Ireland would look something like that. We arrived for lunch at a beach and some of us swan - I stood in the water - but most people didn't. Our last stretch for the day (5km ish) was on the beach, which was amazing because we were allowed to go barefoot and walk in the water. About 10 minutes before we got there, it started to rain. Only lightly, though. Lots of people swam - or went in the water - but less than was expected because of the weather. We were bussed - by one of the teachers - from the beach to the campsite. We had to go in groups of 18 because it was a mini-bus. When we got there there were showers - LUXURY - so lots of  people had a shower and I had a rinse-off. Then we set up our tents at the bottom of a giant hill, which was a pain because the toilet block was at the top. There were also lots of bull ants around, which we nicknamed Spants (spants = spider ants). That night it rained heaps, but we didn't get wet because we were warm and cosy in our tents. The next morning - this morning - I got up at a slightly better time - 6.50am and had to pee, so I walked up the giant hill to go. It had started to rain again, so the quicker we got packed up, the better. We finally packed up, and after a lecture about picking up rubbish, we were off. It was raining consistently, so after about 15 minutes, we were all saturated. We got to about 3.5/4km and we stopped for about a 5 minute break. Next stop was the lighthouse. The lighthouse was up a very steep slope, which I just managed. This time I was carrying no bag, but a tent and drink bottle. We arrived at the lighthouse and I found out it was the lighthouse where Round The Twist was filmed. Awesome stuff. From there, it was about a 10 minute walk to the place where the busses were coming, which took about 20 minutes. Once the buses arrived, we were off and back to Melbourne.

STORY TIME: As I was packing my bag for Duke, a massive cockroach came out of it. I screamed. I am seriously scared of them - bugs and spiders I'm alright with - but cockroaches, NO. I called my dad - first line of defence? - and then he told me to "calm down and kill it with a shoe". So I hit it with my basketball shoe and it half-died. Like, it's leg was still moving, but I think it was dead. It then took me like ten minutes to get it onto a piece of cardboard, because I refused to pick it up with newspaper.

Last time we tried talking to her, she told us she has OCD, but then she's never mentioned it again. Funny, how conveniently it just came up. It also ended in tears. The time before that, when we had a problem with someone, we talked to her and she was perfectly rational and normal about it and she's stopped doing what annoyed us. Now, we're tighter than ever.

I am currently lying on a mattress on my sister's floor. Why? We have a cousin coming over from South Africa tonight (for 5 days) and he is staying my room, while I live in my sister's room. Yesterday, I cleaned my room - properly - and it's so weird to see absolutely nothing on the floor or on my desk.

Day 46: December 4

I think itunes just deleted all of my songs off my ipod. Again. Love you too, Itunes.

RANT ALERT:
Gay Marriage and Adoption
Alright, I am so PRO this. I don't think EVERYONE has to be pro - people have the right to their own opinion. But, I DO think that gay marriage and gay adoption should be legal. Yes, I know people say that you don't HAVE to get married to show your love, but to some people, it's how they express their love to their partner and others. Gay Adoption should absolutely be LEGAL. Why? Gay people have as much right as straight people to be parents. As they cannot naturally conceive babies, how else are they going to get them? Yes, there's always surrogacy, but some people don't like this opinion. Look at Timon and Pumba. They are a perfect example of a same-sex couple raising a child. Look at how perfect Simba turned out. We have our rights, and I KNOW in 20 years (or so), we'll be looking back on this time and thinking "how can we not have allowed it?"
