Day 87: January 14

- Tomorrow I am going to Sydney for 5 days. This means I won't be able to do my blog, as there is no internet in the place I'm staying. *crying face*. I will, however, write my lists on paper and then transfer them onto this blog when I get home. This way, the lists will be done on the appropriate days. I will try do tomorrows, although, I am leaving very early in the morning to catch the flight. See you guys in 5 days (: -

So last night, when I was trying to fall asleep, of course, my thoughts were going 100miles an hour (or kilometres/ers, whichever you prefer. I don't care). I was thinking that if I got free reign over my oral topic, what would I pick? I thought, maybe body image? I only got a little bit done in my head and here it is:
Body Image.
Being teenagers we suffer a lot from negative body image. Whether we're guys, girls, straight, bi, lesbian, pansexual, white, black, asian, Jewish, atheist, Muslim, Christian, tall, short, fat, skinny, someone, somewhere has said something bad about our bodies. Of course, there's also positive body image. People complimenting you on something - your eyes, hair, your butt, your curves, your cheekbones, your hands. Maybe they like your flat stomach. I don't know. They like something though. So in your head, you have two sides - positive and negative. Just like a battery. One side is yelling at you because they don't like something and the other side is complimenting another thing. This is the real problem. There are so many people, with so many opposing options, it's impossible to choose which to follow. It's quite easy to say "Oh, I'm going to follow my opinions and no-one elses", but this is easier said than done. It's like going to the shops and seeing a pair of shorts that you like. You try them on, and they're good, but not perfect. You try on the next pair, which is too loose, but you like the design more than the first one. See, there's so much to choose from, but they all differ slightly. Here's something I found on the internet (creds to Tumblr) about people's opinions of body image:
  • Doctors: Anorexia is an epidemic, people need to eat.
  • Doctors: Obesity is an epidemic, people eat too much.
  • Society: People have unhealthy body images, accept your body the way it is!
  • Society: People should be more concerend about their health, exercise & eat right!
  • Media: Celebrities are way too skinny, they are setting a bad example for young girls.
  • Media: This singer gained 20 pounds, she must be really unhappy.
  • People: Being too skinny is gross, real women have curves.
  • People: Eww, fat rolls.
  • Friends: You're so pretty, you're not fat.
  • Friends: Eww I'm so gross, I need to lose weight.
  • Family: Don't starve yourself, eat. It's not that hard.
  • Family: You ate all of this for breakfast? What is wrong with you?
That is what we have to deal with everyday and then people wonder why we have such distorted ideas of body image. Although, you know what pisses me off the most? It's that people blame society, as if society is a group of aliens that live in space and we never see them. NO! We are society. We're the people who make the bad comments. We say that people have to change. If they're curvy, they're too fat. If they're skinny, they're too bony. If they want to lose weight, they're not allowed, because it's a bad example to young kids. If celebrities in the media lose their abs or gain like 1kg, they are fat. If they lose weight, it's party time! Can't we just leave people as they are. If they're skinny, fat, short, tall, have an arse, have big boobs, have no boobs, have pale skin, have big feet, CAN WE JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE? Just keep to yourself, compliment yourself and LET EVERYONE ELSE BE. If you are going to say something to someone, don't be rude and certainly don't give them a backhanded compliment. Those are the worst. They're just disguised insults. Here's an example: 'You're pretty, don't get me wrong, but you'd look a lot better with make-up on." If you're going to comment, make sure it's nice and if they really really look bad, tell them so in a diplomatic way.
That is all.
